PSE, the primary ingredient, has also been tested for those with asthma and some may find relief with this product.  It has been used for thousands of years in Traditional Chinese Medicine for descending phlegm.  The seed contains over 50% lipids and have a high content of linoleic, linolenic and oleic acids, polyphenols, and the flavonols.  The primary flavonols of PSE that effect allergy are the rosmanaric acid, luteolin, chrysoeriol, and apigenin.  While there are other important phytonutrients in PSE, these are the four we will focus on here for purposes of explanation, starting with the ingredient that has the most effect on histamine inhibition and working down to the least (which is still effective).

APIGENIN

Apigenin is found in the highest concentration in Perilla Seed Extract.  It is also found in other natural foods such as apples, oregano, parsley, celery, cherries, artichoke, basil, endive, grapes, onions, barley, tea, other herbs, and tomatoes to name just a few.  This flavonol has been shown in multiple studies around the world to act to protect our body in more than one way.  Here is just a short list of the functions of this great phytonutrient in addition to its great effect on allergy symptoms:

Ø  Apigenin has been studied for use against UV-radiation.
Ø  Apigenin binds to estrogen receptor sites on cell membranes in order to prevent over-proliferation of these cells in response to estrogen
Ø  Pretreatment with all flavonoids and vitamin C produced dose-dependent reductions in oxidative DNA damage. When ranked in order of potency, only apigenin, rutin and quercetin were more effective than vitamin C in reducing DNA oxidative damage
Ø  Apigenin was shown to induce apoptosis more effectively than quercetin and other flavonoids tested in its effect on human leukemia cells.
Ø  Apigenin was shown to inhibit cancer cell signal transduction and induce apoptosis (the normal cycle of cell death that prevents cancer). 
Ø  Apigenin acts as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic.  It offers free radical protection.  It offers protection from cardiotoxic agents. 
Ø  Has potential use as anti-cancer agent in various types of cancer including prostate, breast, in tumor cells, thyroid and many other applications.
Ø  Some companies hold patents that make use in the preparation of anti-viral medications for use on such diseases as HIV, inflammatory bowel and for skin conditions.

 CHRYSOERIOL

Chrysoeriol, the second most potent flavonol for allergy relief in this extract, acts as an anti-viral and is found in plants known for anti-viral properties, such as olive leaf.  It also is a binding DNA metabolite, and may prevent cancer.   Luteolin has a very high antioxidant potential and is considered to be twice as strong as Vitamin E.  In addition to positively affecting the symptoms of allergy, it is known to be used for inflammatory conditions that are chronic such as GI, Musculoskeletal, and Respiratory; diabetes; obesity; and atherosclerosis.  It may have a place in skin care cancer prevention and may be used for cataracts and other vision disorders.   Because it relaxes smooth muscles and acts as an anti-inflammatory and anti-allergy it is considered in treatment of asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory disorders.  Only Quercitin (also in this formula in the Citrus Bioflavonoids) and Luteolin suppress inflammation from allergies and inhibit platelet activating factors.  Finally there is Rosmanaric Acid which is well known and found in Rosemary, Oregano and lots of other great herbs.  This helps promote wellness by acting as a free radical fighter, a protector against microbes such as bacteria and other pathogens. 

Some other great ingredients can be found in Allergy Shield.  There are vitamins and minerals that support basic nutrient requirements and act as synergistic factors for primary ingredients.  Vitamin D is added to promote a healthy nervous system (stress is a factor in allergies) and to act synergistically with calcium.  Vitamin E, a potent free radical scavenger, inhibits oxidation processes.  Vitamin B6 is an important component for the creation of antibodies.  Vitamin B 12 contributes to the health of the blood and nervous system.  Stress may be a contributory factor with certain allergic reactions.  Biotin is essential for fatty acid metabolism and it may support the digestive tract when allergy problems are present. PABA is an antioxidant that promotes healthy intestinal flora.  When allergy occurs it is prudent to maintain healthy flora so that any digestive process failure will not contribute to the allergic condition.  Our proprietary blend contains L Sporogenes for that very reason.  Inositol has been used by athletes to improve oxygen usage, is a scavenger of free radicals and may be helpful in stabilizing cell membranes.

Folic Acid plays a synergistic role with Vitamin B12 and promotes metabolism in the liver.  Vitamin C is an antioxidant and free radical scavenger that works synergistically with citrus, Perilla and other bioflavonoids to produce antihistamine effects in the body.  Calcium and Magnesium taken together may help ease bronchial tube spasms and allergy reactions.   Additionally these two alkaline electrolytes improve fluid balance, promote alkalinity in the body and promote a less toxic system.  Potassium, as found in this formulation, is an alkaline electrolyte that will promote alkalinity and fluid balance.  There has been some speculation that a low level of potassium is a contributing factor in those who have allergies.  Zinc is an antioxidant that helps boost immunity and activates T-lymphocytes.  Chromium  supports proper metabolism and glucose utilization, Selenium, a free radical scavenger, works in harmony with Vitamin E.  Silicon has been included as it seems to be lacking in people with digestive disorders, which may be one of the initiating factors in some allergic response.  Kelp is included to provide all of the trace minerals the body requires for building a strong immune support system.

The antioxidant package includes alpha lipoic acid (a cascading antioxidant and is one of the very few substances that can actually cross the blood/brain barrier to enter the brain); vitamins listed above; Citrus Bioflavonoids that include the strong companion for Perilla Seed – Quercitin; Ginger Root Extract (used also as an anti-inflammatory and anti-nausea herb); Shisandra Fruit (an adaptogen, for stamina, liver repair, for lung and kidney function, an anti-bacterial)  Grapeseed Extract (containing OPC’s for decreasing capillary permeability and vision support); Carnosol (another cascading antioxidant, found in Rosemary, also an anti-inflammatory); and Mixed Fruit Juice Powders (cold pressed and control temperature dried). 

Anti-inflammatory actions come from a range of nutrient sources including the Carnosol, Ginger Root Extract, Fennel Seed, Capsicum, Bromelain, Papain.  The Bromelain supports digestive functions and Papain is a digestive enzyme.  Capsicum acts as an analgesic and supports blood flow.                

We have included the Omega Oils, DHA/EPA from Tuna.  The Omega Oils are called essential fatty acids (EFA’s).  They are called essential because our body cannot produce them.  The Omega Oils are essential for immune function, to promote muscle & blood vessel relaxation & are found in high concentrations in the brain.  The blood vessel relaxation is important when we have an allergy response.

Eyebright, mullein, boneset, fennel seed, fenugreek seed, and tangerine peel are used in conjunction with the bioflavonoids for symptoms of allergies such as swollen nasal passages, runny eyes, and other “cold” like symptoms.  MSM may provide relief from food, drug, and environmental allergies by competing with allergens for mucous membrane receptor sites.
