and Its Immune System

Our immune system is the gift God gave us in order to keep us healthy and protect us from the toxins and pollutants in a world that is imperfect. The immune system protects against disease in that it identifies pathogens of all types. It detects tumor cells, virus, bacteria, parasites, candida, fungus, free radicals and xenoestrogens. Remember that these pathogens that attack us are sophisticated and evolve to trick our systems however possible. They live off of us.

The immune system is made up of many parts. When our system detects any of the above pathogens it goes into action. It may release an enzyme to kill a virus. Or it may put peptides into action (on the skin or in the respiratory system), use amino acids, use immunological memory to fight, get T Lymphocytes oriented and ready to fight, or use many other mechanisms. For example, keeping pH proper in various body systems helps maintain good health.

T Cells come in three types, killer T Cells (they kill the infected or damaged cells in the body), helper T Cells (they help the body determine which type of response to use when there is an infection or damage), and γδ T cells (these are the bridge cells between the adaptive and innate T cell response - and acts in both ways). This latter type of cell is involved with the thymus gland.

In autoimmune disease the lymph system is compromised and the immune system becomes hyperactive, causing diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus type 1, and HIV (to name a few). In these types of diseases the body has trouble determining self from non-self (antigen) and so the body may be attacking itself by accident.

As a result of that there will be many types of supplements, herbs and natural modalities that can be used by people to help their body use the immune system most effectively. Many doctors and researches have tested IP-6. Tests have been performed to identify the antitumor activity and results have shown significant reduction in tumor activity and incidence. In vitro, experiments with K-562 Erythroleukemia Cell Line have revealed a reduction in cell population in a range of 19% to 36%. Additionally the experiments showed a reduced cell growth and enhanced differentiation when IP-6 was present. Research was also done on colon cancer cells in the HT-29 line. Research results showed that IP-6 can inhibit cell proliferation and increase differentiation. This makes it a candidate for use in human large intestinal cancer, in conjunction with chemotherapy or even as a possible prevention for chemotherapy. Research was done in vitro and in vivo on the HepG2 Human Liver Cancer Cell Line. The effect on growth and differentiation suggested there may be a role for IP-6 in therapy. Researches have assessed that IP-6 is involved in signal transduction pathways, differentiation of genes, and cell cycle regulatory genes. This data strongly indicates that treatment with IP-6 often results in reversion to normal phenotype. In pilot studies, results have indicated that treatment with IP-6 may be effective in treatment of and prevention of mammary cancers. More studies appear to be warranted.

It appears that the presence of IP-6 is found in greatest quantities in plant foods that are high in fiber and may partially explain why a high-fiber diet may be associated with a lower incidence of particular cancers. We also attribute this to the abundant and wide variety of phytonutrients found in the green and high-fiber plant foods. With today's processing of grains and plant foods, the commercial growing methods and distribution methods of fresh foods, we need to supplement for basic phytonutrients and IP-6.
