What do the kidneys do?

Kidneys, which are located at the back of the abdomen, are the filtering organ for your blood (about 4,000 quarts per day).  They are the responsible for eliminating toxins from the body.  Toxins can be as simple as the acid toxic waste from the metabolic process, waste that has been first detoxified by the liver or even chemical toxins from chemotherapy, pesticides, medication, cleaning chemicals etc.  Once the kidneys filter the blood, the water is then reabsorbed along with selective materials.  Since the kidneys are also maintaining appropriate balances of the body fluids, it is important that electrolytes and pH be balanced.  In maintaining these acid/alkaline balances, the kidneys insure that the urinary system keeps from poisoning the body.

How do the kidneys become damaged?

Typically once a person has a kidney stone that does not pass, the physician medicates or conducts a non-invasive procedure to pulverize the stone so it can pass.  In some cases the physician operates.  This is something you will want to avoid.  The kidneys, due to the fact that they detoxify and process uric acid, are highly acidic.  It is difficult for kidneys to heal. 

What can I do to avoid this?
