I3C stands for Indole 3 Carbinol and DIM stands for Diindolymethane.  We might all like to know what are these and why do I need to take them?  These ingredients are extracts from cruciferous vegetables. The I3C is a phytonutrient extracted from the vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage etc. and the DIM is a molecular fraction of that molecule.  In fact, I3C metabolizes and turns to DIM.  We have combined these extracts with the cold pressed vegetable powders to get the synergistic effects and make this product very bioavailable. There is a growing body of research that shows that cruciferous vegetables provide us with great benefits. We have all heard this from our Mom’s and Grandma’s.  It turns out, they were right!  These cruciferous vegetables promote apoptosis in the body, which is normal cell death.  Without that cells may grow uncontrolled in the body in an unregulated fashion.  When apoptosis does not occur the result can be cancer. The I3C with DIM may modulate the hormone profile by increasing the enzymes that aid the body in neutralizing estrogen and xeno-estrogen environmental factors that may be carcinogenic.  Dioxin and other compounds found in plastic, pesticides, treated surfaces and fibers and the environment may create problems in the body and this is sometimes known as the xeno-estrogens. I3C may protect DNA and other functions of the body from xeno-estrogen effects and is protective of prostate and breast tissue.

Some studies show that I3C has protective effects for both men and women and may work with testosterone and other androgenic hormones. I3C may increase the estrones and lower estradiols which may be harmful. Studies now show that I 3 C and DIM help maintain normal levels of the damaging estrogen so they do not spiral out of control. In the stomach, I3C is converted to metabolites, especially to diindolylmethane (DIM), which may be responsible for the health benefits associated with I3C.

Indole-3-carbinol is produced from indole-3-glucosinolate via the action of the enzyme myrosinase (thioglucoside glucohydrolase), an enzyme which is present in cruciferous vegetables and activated upon maceration of the vegetables…. Indole-3-carbinol may modulate estrogen metabolism. It may also have anticarcinogenic, antioxidant and anti-atherogenic activities…. I3C has significantly reduced the number of tumor-bearing animals and the number of tumors per animal, compared with controls, in an animal model of spontaneous mammary tumorogenesis. I3C, administered after carcinogen initiation, also significantly inhibited chemically induced mammary tumors……. I3C had inhibitory effects on aflatoxin-induced tumor formation when given both before and after aflatoxin exposure. More research on this issue is needed. Still other animal studies have demonstrated that I3C exerted protective effects of various types against cancers of the endometrium, lung, tongue, colon and liver……. Cell culture work has shown that HPV proliferation was inhibited by the action of I3C. Subsequently, it was shown that feeding I3C to nude mice significantly inhibited the formation of papillomatous cysts. This, in turn, led to a human study in which I3C again significantly inhibited the formation of these lesions—this time in children…… There is preliminary evidence from in vitro studies that I3C-induced metabolites can inhibit oxidation of LDL-cholesterol and that they can also inhibit smooth muscle cell proliferation…… Indole-3-carbinol may be synergistic with tamoxifen in protecting against breast cancer.”
